In 2005 the first twinning occured between Pontypridd Town Council and Mbale. In 2007 Rhondda Cynon Taff (Population 240,000) formally agreed to twin with the Mbale region (population 960,000). This was celebrated by the Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taff signing a twinning agreement at the EU conference in Strasborg the following year. Over the years two RCT councillors, Steve Carter and Sian Assiratti, have visited. We have also been privileged to have 3 cabinet
members of the Welsh Assembly Government visiting Mbale - Jayne Davidson, Jane Hutt and John Griffiths. In 2011 the Chief Medical Officer of Wales, Dr Tony Jewell, travelled with a medical team. We have been awarded 2 UN Gold stars by Rhodri Morgan, the former First Minister, and two more by Carwyn Jones, the current First Minister.
