Education and School Links
The main purpose of the Education and School links section of PONT is to create friendship links between schools in Wales and the Mbale region of Eastern Uganda to:
- Extend pupils and staffs views of the world, embracing the concept of global citizenship.
- Enable pupils to learn about and respect one another’s cultures by sharing of ideas and experiences.
- Enable intercultural dialogue, increased knowledgeof one another’s societies and enhance schools curriculums
Progress so far
Following an exploratory visit in 2004, 7 schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf became partners with 7 schools in Mbale in 2005.
During the last 10 years PONT Education and School links has partnered around 100 schools, (which have included Nursery, Infants, Primary, Secondary and Special Schools) in Wales, with schools in Mbale. Teachers and Pupils have shared experiences and learnt about each other’s ways of life.
Partnerships are used to enable pupils to learn about and respect each other’s cultures. They share ideas and experiences and develop common projects in areas such as literacy, numeracy, geography sport, music, and sustainable development, to enhance the curriculum.
A dedicated committee in each country, which includes teachers and retired teachers, prepare guidelines for creating and maintaining sustainable partnerships. Schools visits and meetings to share good practice are arranged. Help and support is provided including distribution of communications and arrangements for visits to and from Mbale.
Other projects include setting up and monitoring of school libraries, teacher training, tree planting, improving the access to education for children with disabilities, and supporting schools with facilities, basic equipment, and resources.
The schools in Uganda are looking for our friendship and interest in their lives, we can all offer this, and receive a warm and rewarding friendship in return. If your school is interested in this please contact us for more details
